X-cube prisms are used to combine three monochrome sources, like LED illuminators, into a white light output or to split white light into three bands.  The illumination must be restricted to a relatively narrrow cone, typically 10 degrees.  X-cubes are reated according to the fficiency with which they transmit light of a specified polarization - S or P.  Typically, only one polarization efficiency is guaranteed for each output although the efficiencly of the opposite polarization is generally not much less. Absorption in the prism is minimal so light that is not included in the efficiency measurement will exit from one of the other faces.  In some applications, this means that a trim filter to restrict the transmission band of one or more faces may be needed.
