Spheres

Why Spheres?

Maybe selling ball lenses or integrating spheres makes sense in the context of a store that sells optics and imaging equipment but why are other types of spheres here?

Just because we like spheres.    Especially in spherical coordinates where they are expressed as r=x.  You can't get much simpler than that.

Over time, you will see our offering of spherical items expand.  Since we are in Tucson, the first listings are for mineral spheres that we buy at the annual Tucson Gem and Mineral Showcase (43 venues) in January and February every year.   By the way, this is an interesting time to visit Tucson.  The weather is nice and anyone can get into most of the venues without documents or cost.  See the XPOpress website for a full listing and to download the show guides in late January.

We plan to add some optical spheres, of course, and also spherical games, spheres of pure materials - elements and compounds, industrial and scientific spheres of many sizes, spherical art objects and household spheres from golf balls (with our logo) to landscape castings.  The size range for spherical objects is quite large - 66 orders of magnitude.  See our chart here.

We have already built up a large database of sources so if you are looking for a particular type of sphere, let us know.  Maybe we can supply it.

  • A small sample of pure germanium

    Single-Crystal Germanium Sphere - 25 to 100 mm Diameter

These are single-crystal germanium spheres machined from optical-grade germanium boules.  The CNC machining technique used assures that the polish is uniform around the sphere, not subject to the effects of the crystal orientation that may appear...
