 Tianyunxing UV-sensitive Line Scan CCD Sensors

 Image sensors designed for monochromatic visible use are generally sensitive from a little below 400 nm to 1000 nm or so.  In order to make these sensors detect ultraviolet radiation below 400 nm, two modificationbs are necessary.  First, the glass windows must be removed because these block practically all incoming radiation below 350 nm.  Second, the sensors need to be coasted with a conversion material that absorbs incoming UV and emits visible wavelengths that can be detected by the sensor's photodiodes. 

Tianyunxing performs both of these operations on a variety of line and area sensors.  Their two standard line scan products are shown here.  The coating used is a new adaptation of the traditional Lumogen fluorescent dye developed by Tianyunxing to provide improved exposure lifetime and adhesion.  The esultiung combination retains the quantum efficiency of the base sensor down to about 400 nm and approximately 15% QE below 400 nm to the cutoff at about 150 nm. 

Precautions

The coated sensors are shipped without cover glass and so should be handled with care.  When properly handled and used in a properly-controlled exposure environment, these sensors will operate for at least five years.  For maximum longevity, follow these rules:

  • Test the driver and readout circuitry and operating environment using stock sensors of the same type as will be used with the UV modification.  UV coating does not cure noise, thermal or other environmental problems.
  • Handle the sensors with care in a clean environment.  Do not touch the surface of the sensor with anything.
  • Operate the sensoirs in a dry nitrogen atmosphere.  The presence of oxygen, corrosive gases or condensing vapors will degrade the performance of the UV converter prematurely.
  • Control the exposure lavels to avoid saturation of the sensor photoodiodes.  This provides maximum lifetime of the UV converter.  Keep the sensor in the dark when it is not in active use.  Remember that the converter operates even when the sensor is off.
  • Please note that installing a window on the sensor will void its warranty.
